The Duty Manager provides back-up support for classroom teachers to enable them to isolate a student from the classroom. It is not an alternative to the behaviour management framework or an addition to the behaviour management framework, nor is it in itself a sanction.
When should I use the Duty Manager?
When you need to isolate a student from the classroom and there is no suitable place for them to be supervised nearby or the student is refusing to leave the classroom, or the incident requires a ‘blue card’ consequence.
How do I contact the Duty Manager?
Phone the Duty Manager Base (264) stating your name, your classroom, the name of the student and their tutor group. You must also give a reason for calling the Duty Manager i.e.:
Non compliance
student refusing to leave the classroom
‘blue card’ incident
If you are unable to access a phone, send a student with a note of the above information to the nearest member of staff with access to a phone.
What do I do when the Duty Manager arrives?
Provide the Duty Manager with appropriate work for the student to undertake. For practical activities, suitable work will be available within the Base.
If the reason for the Duty Manager call is a ‘blue card’ incident ensure that the Duty Manager is fully aware of the nature of the incident.
What can I expect the Duty Manager to do?
The Duty Manager will take the student to the Duty Manager Base or an alternative location and ensure that the incident is logged.
The Duty Manager will take no further action unless the reason is a ‘blue card’ incident in which case the relevant DHT will be informed as soon as possible.
When will the student return?
If you have provided the student with work, they will return at the end of the period with their completed work, otherwise they will not return until the next lesson.
Students removed from class because of a ‘blue card’ incident will remain in the Duty Manager Base until dealt with by a DHT.
What do I do next?
You implement the behaviour management system, taking action appropriate to the stage the student has reached. If the student has been involved in a ‘blue card’ incident you must make a referral to your PT/HoF who will forward the referral to the appropriate DHT. This is important to ensure that the DHT is in possession of the full facts when dealing with parents/carers.
